About the Artist
Kathy Phillips was raised in a small borough of Pittsburgh PA called Dormont. At 5 years old she went ‘door to door’, selling her drawings of bunnies, clowns and embroidery samples to all the “elderly” woman in the neighborhood for 5 cents. (She puts elderly in quotes, since it was her perspective as a child and the women were probably were only in their 30’s!)
Kathy received an M. F. A. in Costume design and credits her education in fashion, theatre, sewing and painting for feeding her soul. After graduation, Kathy refocused her career on textile design and has spent the last 25 years in the corporate world as a textile designer and Creative Director working with many top retailers and fabric companies. After the death of her mother, her biggest creative influence, and becoming an empty nester, Kathy was inspired to work on her own art again.
Kathy’s home and studio are located in Indian Land SC on 3 acres of land, filled with many trees – surroundings that have fueled her fascination for nature. She has fallen in love with Eco Printing – a process of transferring plants and leaves onto natural fibers such as fabric and paper. The natural materials are enclosed and bundled, then steamed or immersed in hot water to extract the pigment. She loves the “surprise and delight” that occurs when unwrapping each piece. The consequence of serendipity is the essence of these one-of-a-kind prints created with plant dyes.
